NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga on Sunday drummed up support for Siaya ODM candidates, urging residents to vote for them and ignore independents.
Candidates who accompanied him included Governor Cornel Rasanga, Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Otiende Amollo (Rarieda) and Elisha Odhiambo (Gem).
Ochanda defeated Raila’s elder brother Oburu Oginga, while Odhiambo defeated his cousin Jakoyo Midiwo.
Midiwo decided to run as an independent, while Oburu opted to back Ochanda.
Raila spoke on his way to Kapsabet, where NASA held a rally later in the day. He attended the consecration and enthronement of Canon David Hellingtone Kodia at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and
“I don’t want independents to complicate issues on my home turf. They are independent as the name suggests,” he said.
Pentagon members Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang’ula were present.
“Give me players who wear the same jersey as mine,” Raila said.
He told residents that they are looking forward to forming the next government and their support must be visible.
Raila said electing independents will make him a lame-duck President, yet “I need foot soldiers to help me transform Kenya.”
The crowd pledged their support for Rasanga. He faces Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo, an independent.
Raila urged Siaya voters to emulate their Mombasa counterparts, who, in 2013, ensured all 30 ODM MCA and governor candidates won.
“Mombasa gave ODM 100 per cent support in 2013. Here, we had madoadoa [winners from other parties]. We have to lead by example,” he said.
Kalonzo and Mudavadi urged residents not to disappoint Raila. “If we could respect him and shelve our bids, who are you not to shelve yours?” Mudavadi asked in reference to independents.
