Someone asked me why I hate Raila Odinga. I had to be honest with him. First, i told him that hate is a big word. I just disagree with his policies. Secondly, I told the gentleman that the fact that he doesn’t read history means that he is likely to sound ignorant on political matters.
Why? He said that Raila was jailed for fighting for Kenya’s second liberation. I told him NO! Raila was jailed for his involvement in the coup attempt of 1982. A very dark period in the history of this country.
His release coincided with the release of genuine patriots; Kenneth Matiba, Koigi Wamwere, Jaramogi Oginga and anyiri Kihoro. He joined up and used the group of Martha Karua, James Orengo, Martin Shikuku and Paul Muite and others to camouflage his tainted past. Unlike the rest, his jailing is nothing to be proud of as he tries to make it sound.
Third reason, his past has many shadows. His battle to take over Ford-Kenya with the late Micheal Wamalwa, let me not indulge you into that embarrassing moment. What puzzles me is his education.
Rumor has it that he didn’t go to high school and if so, did he go to university? There are reports that he was a lecturer at University of Nairobi. If so, can 10 of his students stand up? Did he ever practice engineering? More rumors have it that he was only employed as a lab assistant and not a lecturer as claimed.
This puts a lot of doubts in his “qualifications”. Let me not be misunderstood that academic excellence is the sole measure of success. It is not. My only problem is, why falsify facts? If it is true, why is it so twisted with so many angles? Why is it so easy for James Orengo, Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula to explain their academics with elements of calibration and not Raila?
Behind every rumor, there are elements of truth!
Fourth reason that I gave to my friend was; in the history of our country, the two major lows we have experienced from internal politics were in 1982 and 2007. Guess who was at the center of the two? Exactly.
The old man maybe innocent, maybe a good man but we are not short of leaders so as to go for one who is so soiled in controversy. History cannot be so consistently unfair to one man. We write our own history. No hate to the man, just that history guides me differently.
